Three steps. About eight seconds.
01Place your tool on A4.
Any white sheet, flat on the bench.
02Snap a photo.
Roughly top-down. The corners do the measuring.
03Print the bin.
A watertight STL, sized to nest your tool.
Every tool, one photo.
Lay the whole set on a single sheet. Gridmate traces each silhouette. You choose the layout.
- SPLIT (showing)01/03One bin per tool.
- PAPER02/03Pockets exactly where you laid them.
- AUTO03/03Packed into one bin, 90° turns.
Your photo never leaves your device.
The whole pipeline (vision and CAD) is WebAssembly running in this tab, not on a server.
Privacy by architecture
Your photo, EXIF, GPS and all, never touches a server.
No upload, no queue
About eight seconds on an ordinary laptop, every time.
Watertight, printable output
One solid body, standard Gridfinity foot, slices clean.
The entire pipeline (corner detection, rectification, silhouette extraction and CAD) runs locally in your browser. Your photo is never uploaded.
From a photo to a printable bin
Gridmate turns a single photo into a custom, Gridfinity-compatible bin sized to the exact tool in the picture. Lay a screwdriver, a wrench or a whole drawer of sockets on an A4 sheet, snap a photo, and the silhouette is traced in your browser, with no measuring, no CAD, no slicer plug-in. What comes out is a 3D-printable tool organizer with a tool-shaped pocket and a standard Gridfinity foot, ready to drop onto the baseplates you already print.
Most ways there are slower or blunter: online Gridfinity generators size regular bins by whole grid units, and measuring a tool by hand to model it in CAD takes real time and skill. Gridmate does neither: it traces the tool straight from your photo into a Gridfinity-compatible bin with a pocket shaped to it, in about eight seconds, no CAD.
Every bin exports as a watertight STL and a colour-aware 3MF, so it slices clean in Bambu Studio, PrusaSlicer or OrcaSlicer. A 0.4 mm nozzle at 0.20 mm layer height in PETG or PLA prints the same profile that produces Gridfinity baseplates, and per-bin print-time and filament estimates are shown before you commit. Because the whole photo-to-bin pipeline runs locally, your original photo, EXIF, GPS and all, never leaves the device.
Tracing, editing and the full 3D preview are free. A one-time $6 unlock turns on STL and 3MF export, plus finger holes, magnet pockets and label tabs, on every bin you ever make. No subscription, no per-export fee, nothing recurring.

Questions that come up.
A modular workshop-organisation system by Zack Freedman. 42 mm grid baseplates with bins on top. Gridmate produces bins compatible with the public Gridfinity spec (MIT-licensed).
Most tools are weirdly shaped. Calipers can measure a screwdriver in 30 seconds; a multimeter in 10 minutes. A photo captures the silhouette in one shot, and the bin is auto-clearance-padded.
Sub-0.5 mm on a sharp A4 photo. We rectify the paper to the standard 210 × 297 mm and back-solve the px-to-mm ratio. Failure modes (glare, glove, fold) are flagged before generation. A trace takes about eight seconds on an ordinary laptop.
Both. The $6 unlock exports a watertight STL and a 3MF of the same custom Gridfinity-compatible bin, straight from your browser. STL drops into any slicer; the 3MF carries colours and per-object settings for Bambu Studio, PrusaSlicer and OrcaSlicer. No file leaves your device until you export.
Yes, that is the whole point. Anything that can print Gridfinity baseplates handles a Gridmate bin: Bambu, Prusa, Voron, Ender. 0.4 mm nozzle, 0.20 layer height, PETG or PLA. Per-bin print-time and filament estimates live in the Print info panel on the generation screen.
Lay the whole set on one A4 sheet and Gridmate traces each silhouette, then arranges them into a custom Gridfinity-compatible tool organizer: one bin or a tray of pockets. Sockets, wrenches, pliers, bits, gauges: if it casts a clean shadow on the paper, it gets a snug pocket.
Generic Gridfinity bins and dividers give you rectangular compartments sized by grid units; a Gridmate bin has a pocket shaped to the actual tool, traced from your photo. The result still sits on the standard 42 mm Gridfinity grid and prints on the same baseplates, but the tool drops into its own silhouette instead of rattling around a box. Shadow foam does something similar, except it is a cut-once consumable. A Gridmate bin is reprintable and modular.
Online Gridfinity generators build regular bins sized in grid units, and they don't shape a pocket to your specific tool. Measuring with calipers and modelling it in Fusion, Tinkercad or OpenSCAD does get you a custom pocket, but it's minutes to hours of work and needs CAD skill. Gridmate goes from one photo to a tool-shaped, Gridfinity-compatible bin in about eight seconds, no CAD required.
No. The trace runs entirely in your browser, so by default your photo never leaves your device. If you save a bin to your account, we keep a privacy-scrubbed copy of the prepared sheet (EXIF and GPS stripped) so you can re-open and edit it later. Sharing a failed trace with us is strictly opt-in.
